Youth Leader's Navy Status is Investigated by Guard
Friday, August 20, 1999
BEND, Ore. - The head of an Oregon National Guard youth program has been placed on paid administrative leave while the Guard investigates claims by veterans' groups that he misrepresented himself as a former Navy SEAL and prisoner of war.
"We've had several allegations come out, and we have an obligation to get to the bottom of things," said Col. Mike Caldwell, the Guard's deputy director for state affairs. "That's how we're proceeding right now -- we'll see what comes out of it."
Keith Bonner, 66, of La Pine denies the allegations, calling them a "smear campaign."
